Zextras Group, which develops the Carbonio groupware suite, announced the availability of its open source Community Edition (via Yahoo! Finance). A competitor to solutions such as Office 365, Google Workspace, or open source solutions like Zimbra, Carbonio CE offers email, calendaring and events, contacts, tasks, chat (including video), files, and documents for free. The solution is supported on Ubuntu 20.04 or RHEL 8 servers, and has minimal software requirements (primarily Python 3 and Perl).
OnlyOFFICE’s DocSpace Provides Secure Collaboration
OnlyOFFICE, a leading document authoring and collaboration platform, has launched DocSpace per TechTimes. This enhancement allows administrators to create custom permission-based “rooms” for users to collaborate in, as well as other security updates such as data privacy compliance (GDPR, HIPAA), strong encryption, and support for 2-Factor Authentication.
Android Authority’s Highlights FOSS Alternatives to Slack
Speaking of Mattermost, it and its FOSS Zulip found mention in Android Authority’s list of best Slack alternatives. For these two solutions, the ability to self-host the open source versions, as well as the lack of any restrictions on content, were front and center.
Mattermost Levels Up with Improved Generative AI
While at a foundational level AI is covered extensively in other news outlets. But as it pertains to this site the current trend is adding generative AI, or AI that creates content its own content, to existing applications. For example, Mattermost announced that it’s upping its investment in AI in its collaboration platform (via OpenSourceForU). Areas of focus include support for different AI engines, functional intelligence (i.e. automating specific business roles), and domain-focused AI (tuning the AI for specific industries).
